If you have any questions before buying your gear, our team of specialists will be happy to help you find the perfect setup.

🏂 How to choose a snowboard

What snowboard should I buy?

Choosing a snowboard depends mainly on your riding level, weight, height, riding style and the type of terrain where you will use it.

There is no single perfect snowboard for every rider. Someone looking to ride freestyle in the park will need a different board from someone looking for speed and stability for freeride.

At Back in Black, we help you choose between different snowboard types:

All Mountain: versatile for all types of slopes and snow conditions.
Freestyle: designed for tricks, jumps and park riding.
Freeride: focused on powder snow and mountain riding.
Splitboard: designed for touring and backcountry ascents.

How do I choose the right snowboard size?

The length of a snowboard is mainly determined by the rider’s weight, although height, ability level and riding style also influence the choice.

As a general guide:

  • Beginner riders usually look for more manageable boards.
  • Advanced riders can use longer boards for greater stability.
  • Freestyle riders normally choose slightly shorter boards.
  • Freeride riders usually choose longer boards.

Choosing the correct size improves control, stability and the overall performance of the snowboard.

👉 Check out our snowboard category.

What snowboard do I need if I am a beginner?

For beginners, the ideal choice is usually a snowboard that is easy to control, stable and forgiving.

Beginner snowboards usually have:

  • Easier turning.
  • Softer flex.
  • Good stability at moderate speeds.
  • Profiles that help reduce edge catches.

Making the right choice from the beginning will help you progress faster and enjoy your first seasons on the snow.

What is the difference between an All Mountain, Freestyle and Freeride snowboard?

All Mountain Snowboard

The most versatile option. It allows you to enjoy groomed slopes, small jumps, variable snow conditions and different types of terrain.

Freestyle Snowboard

Designed for riders looking for tricks, park riding, rails and jumps.

Freeride Snowboard

Designed for powder snow, backcountry riding and big mountain lines.

What is the profile of a snowboard?

The profile is the shape of the snowboard when viewed from the side.

The main snowboard profiles are:

Camber

Provides more response, stability and power. Commonly used by riders looking for precision and performance.

Rocker

Makes turning easier and reduces the risk of catching an edge.

Hybrid

Combines different areas of camber and rocker to achieve a balance between response and ease of use.

🥾 Snowboard boots and bindings

How do I choose snowboard boots?

Boots are possibly the most important part of your snowboard setup.

A good snowboard boot should:

  • Hold your foot correctly.
  • Be comfortable for many hours.
  • Match your riding level.
  • Have the right stiffness.

A boot that is too soft or too stiff can negatively affect your control over the snowboard.

👉 Discover our snowboard boots.

How do I know my snowboard boot size?

Snowboard boots should fit snugly without causing pain.

It is normal for your toes to slightly touch the front of the boot when standing, as your foot moves backwards when you bend your knees into a riding position.

We recommend choosing your size according to each manufacturer’s sizing guide, as fit can vary between brands.

What is the difference between soft and stiff snowboard boots?

Soft boots

  • More comfortable.
  • Greater freedom of movement.
  • Ideal for freestyle and riders looking for comfort.

Stiff boots

  • Better power transmission.
  • More precision.
  • Recommended for freeride and advanced riding.

How do I choose snowboard bindings?

Bindings connect your boots to the snowboard and transfer your movements to the board.

When choosing bindings, you should consider:

  • Snowboard type.
  • Rider level.
  • Compatibility with the snowboard.
  • Boot size.

Good bindings improve the response and control of your setup.

🏔️ Splitboard and backcountry snowboarding

What is a splitboard?

A splitboard is a snowboard that can be separated into two parts for mountain ascents.

It allows you to climb using climbing skins and then transform back into a regular snowboard for the descent.

It is the ideal option for riders who want to explore untouched snow and backcountry areas.

Who is a splitboard recommended for?

Splitboards are designed for experienced snowboarders with basic mountain knowledge.

Besides having the right equipment, it is important to have training in safety, navigation and snow conditions.

🧰 Snowboard maintenance

How often should I wax my snowboard?

It depends on how often you ride and the snow conditions.

As a general rule:

  • Occasional use: several times per season.
  • Frequent use: more regular maintenance.

A well-waxed snowboard glides better and keeps its performance for longer.

How should I take care of my snowboard?

We recommend:

  • Drying your snowboard after every use.
  • Storing it correctly.
  • Keeping the edges maintained.
  • Waxing it regularly.
  • Checking bindings and screws.
